When to Install Sod

Sod can be installed almost any time of year, as long as the ground is not frozen and you have adequate water for establishment and maintenance. Cool-season grasses in our region (e.g., fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass) are best installed in early fall or spring when temperatures are mild and rainfall is more consistent.

Aftercare: Keeping Your Sod Healthy

Once installed, proper maintenance is crucial for the sod to establish strong roots and remain healthy.

Watering

  • Water sod thoroughly right away after installation.

  • Continue watering deeply and frequently for the first two weeks (at least 2-3 times daily).

  • Reduce watering gradually after the sod takes root (about 2–3 weeks post-installation).

  • Once established, maintain a deep watering schedule of about 1–1.5 inches per week.

  • Take rainfall into account to avoid over-watering. Watering in the late evening/overnight is discouraged, especially in hot humid weather as water remaining on the grass can promote disease and fungus.

  • The perimeter of the lawn is more likely to dry out. Hand water these areas thoroughly.

  • Continue to water as needed throughout the summer. Irrigating deeply and infrequently encourages roots to grow deep, making the turf more tolerant to drought.

Fertilizing

  • Apply a starter fertilizer at installation to promote root growth.

  • Avoid heavy fertilization in the first month to prevent burning young roots.

  • Feed with a balanced fertilizer 4–6 weeks after installation for continued healthy growth.

Mowing

  • Wait at least 2–3 weeks before the first mow or until the grass reaches 3–4 inches in height.

  • Use a sharp mower blade and remove only one-third of the grass blade length.

  • Avoid mowing when the sod is wet to prevent damage.

Usage Tips

  • Limit foot traffic for the first 2–3 weeks to allow roots to establish.

  • Keep pets off newly installed sod to prevent damage.

  • Inspect regularly for weeds, pests, or signs of disease and address issues promptly.

  • Consider adding Core aerating to your regular lawn maintenance routine to aide the development of a deep root system.

By following these guidelines, your new sod will quickly establish and provide a lush, green lawn that enhances your outdoor space.
